Bar Caol Ila Review
Shibuya is a busy part of Tokyo and with many selections for bars, but when it comes to a great whisky bar in the hustle and bustle, nothing beats Bar Caol Ila. First established in 2003 and run by Moto-san and Ichikawa-san. They have a strong connection with the Distillery of Caol Ila and their passion for it, has led them to craft this amazing establishment.
On arrival to the building, it won’t like much, but after ascending to the third level you will be greeted with a smile and perfectly presented bar. Well stocked, so get ready to settle yourself in for a quick dram or an evening of enlightenment.
A wide selection of Scotch and Whisky is available, but why choose when you can ask the highly skilled owners to find one of the squirrelled bottles for something special for you. As the name suggests there is lots of Caol Ila here and independent bottled expressions too.
The remarkable dram I love here is the Whisky Daisky, Glen Familiar (Bar Caol Ila) house bottling. This is superb and divine. They come from a living cask aged 0, 10, 20, 31, 60, 90 days! Originated from a cask of ‘cask strength’ Caol Ila. When this was emptied it was refilled with various Caol Ila scotch, then Japanese Whisky various (including Karuizawa), then the final refill with Glenfarclas. This is a divine dram but I only hope the limited quantity is still around when you get there.
